Easing my way into the weekend

Right now I am sitting here drinking tea and writing lots of notes in my notebook. Ideas for new projects, ideas for Jim's businesses and anything else that comes to mind. I have lots of exciting times ahead and I need to start making a few plans.

And so the journey begins....

In two weeks I have lost 5 lbs.....4 lbs in the first week and a solitary 1 lb this week. I had hoped for two pounds this week but hey as long as I am losing then that is all that matters. I am pleased and already my clothes feel a little less tight.

This weekend I need to do some painting....I say need to as my soul is crying out for some creative time. I have opened my sketchbook again and started doodling as even if I can just do this it helps. In the meantime I will continue to cook healthy meals, stay positive and feel extremely grateful for everything and everyone I have in my life.

I love watching other artists paint. No matter the subject or if I am familiar with the techniques, I still find it so wonderful to watch a fellow artist put paint to paper/canvas/wood/or whichever medium they choose. It is also incredibly inspiring and I am grateful to those that have the time and the technology to share their process.

Thank you so much yesterday for all your encouraging comments regarding my weight loss. Your support is so valuable and thank you for sharing your stories too. Blogland is full of amazing and inspiring people.

So far I am staying on track and yesterday I turned down a Pain au Chocolat (which I adore) and a Krispy Kreme donut/doughnut. They were doing the rounds at work and there was enough for everyone to have one of each, but I declined. And whilst everyone else felt a bit stuffed at the end of the day, I felt fine and didn't even feel like I had missed out.

I know some weeks it won't be easy but the long term goal will be well worth it.

Thanks again all you wonderful people and have a brilliant, healthy and happy day!

Time for a change....

A younger, slimmer me!

I’m going through a bit of a change personally right now. I am dead happy with who I am and my life as a whole, although I do wish to change some aspects to it but that will be another post for another time. But generally, all is great. However, it’s my health that I need to address and how I feel about myself. I am overweight. And this does not make me happy, give me any sort of confidence in public situations and therefore I don’t feel good about myself. I don’t shy away from going out but when I do I am just really self conscious that I am not looking my best. I have been slimmer and healthier in the past and have to get back there again.

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis which can be painful at times and I know that being overweight isn’t helping the situation. I have some clothes in my wardrobe which I love but cannot fit into which is frustrating. And it ends up a vicious circle, I am not happy with my weight so I comfort eat, and the more I comfort eat the more weight I put on. Some of you may know where I am coming from.

So last week I did something about it. I signed up to Weight Watchers online and have started my healthy eating plan. I have my wedding this year and want to feel good about myself in my wedding dress. To be able to look back at the photo’s and not hate the roundness of my face, or the chubby arms and let’s not talk about the derriere!

I also want to make myself some dresses this year so I have another incentive – to make myself a dress like this one once I have slimmed down. Maybe take myself off to an evening dressmaking class and learn the right way of doing it.

I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve reached 40, but I am yearning for a new look. A change in hairstyle, whether it’s the colour or cut, change my wardrobe by buying some classic pieces and ones that I feel great in. And above all to feel healthy and fit. It can be done and I am lucky to have the support of my lovely Jim as he is also on a health and fitness quest (and is doing really well too!).

I know I am not the only person in the world to feel like this and I wanted to share this with you as this blog is not just about my art, but about me too.

Everything has gone array lately. I guess life it like that at times. My creative time has been zilch and I need to do something about it and quick. Now that the dreaded 31st January tax deadline is over I can breathe a bit – both at the day job and at home.

I have been de-cluttering and it feels good. I’ve still got lots to do as I really want to lead a simplified life. It’s true that the minute you give something to charity or throw it away, you find you need it, but seriously, if you’ve not used something in a year (even two) then do you really need it? And I’m talking clothes, shoes, bags, books, and just stuff. I keep asking myself why I am keeping things?

Anyway, before Christmas I shared some sketches I had done of a cat, which were based on my departed Pippa. Well here is the finished sketch...the one I liked the most. I wonder what journeys behold her in the future

It's been a while....

Hello!!! I'm still here! It's been a shamefully (is that a word?) long time since I blogged. Christmas Eve to be exact. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New year (a distant memory now especially as next week we are in February)! Since Christmas I have been getting over tonsillitis, renovating the cottage (The Never Ending Story as I now call it), spending time with friends and family, commuting into London for the day job which still completely tires me out and de-cluttering my life. A very busy time indeed.

The cottage is coming along nicely and I can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Even if one job that appears to be easy ends up being a right pain and takes longer than you think and tests the patience of my lovely Jim. It'll be worth it when it's done.

We have year end at work which means lots of figures for me and a busy time, not forgetting Jim and my own tax return to do. All of this hasn't left me much time to be creative.

However did you see the picture above of all the lovely books I received for Christmas (and one afterwards). Wow. I love crafts and I love books, so to get books on crafting and baking is pure heaven. I've had a good old read already and have lots of ideas and projects earmarked for the future. Once 31st Jan has passed I can get to it!

Most of the books were from my wonderful Jim, as was this gorgeous necklace he bought me which is made of real poppies in resin. Handmade and perfect. I am very fortunate to have him in my life.

Well I hope to get back in to the blogging world again. I've been reading others but just haven't had the time to comment or post anything. But I hope to show you soon projects I am working on.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I finally finished sewing the names on the stockings, adding sequins and jingle bells, and they have been hung up ready for Father Christmas to stop by.

I had great fun sewing these, especially to Seven Brides for Seven Brothers last week, where I successfully introduced the film to the next generation. It made my day.

I hope that you have a truly wonderful Christmas and that 2012 will be a great year for you all.

Thanks to everyone who has read my blog, commented and to those I have made friends with - you are all an inspiring bunch of people.

A page from my sketchbook

The other day I was working at my computer and we had a power surge which resulted in a 40 minute delay to get it up and running again. It also happened that at that time I was feeling a bit creative so it didn't take long for me to find some scrap paper and start doodling.

I started doodling a cat in a real simplistic form and then took inspiration from my moggy who sadly is no longer with me - I still miss her and I still miss the smell she had round her neck (strange I know but when I cuddled up to her and nuzzled her neck, she had the most wonderful smell).

So in honour of my moggy I have a little characature of her which I will share with you tomorrow. Here are the doodles I created in order to get to the final version, which I have since glued into my sketchbook with good old PVA. As she aged, she became somewhat portly (don't we all) and a little bit chubby. I recall one time I took her to the vets as I was worried about these 'flaps' appearing on each side of her and the vet kindly referred to them as love handles. Don't you just love it that cats can get those.

Anyway, as she was somewhat rounded you can see from my doodles where I got my inspiraton from. And here's a picture of Pippa - my lovely, beautiful cat.

Agnes Cecile

You tube is great for finding inspiration and seeing artists at work. I recently found the work of Agnes Cecile and her work is amazing.

I love the drips, the emotions you feel from her work and the colours. I tip my hat to her (if I wore one).

I hope you enjoy watching this as much as I did and admire her talent!

This time next week it'll be a few days until Christmas......think I need to get a move on and get everything sorted out. Thankfully I have cut the spending down quite a bit this year which makes life so much easier. I know I keep on saying this but it really is about being with those you love - that is the gift.

A trip down memory lane

Last week I posted about my needle case that I had made when I was ten years old and still use. Well would you believe I have another item that is much older than the needle case that I came across on Friday.

Jim's eldest daughter wasn't feeling well so I offered her up my hot water bottle. When I got it out of the drawer I smiled as it's in an old nightdress case I had when I was a kid. Growing up in the seventies, there wasn't such luxurious things as hot water bottles with fluffy covers, you really just had a blue hot water bottle that you covered in a towel to stop yourself from burning if you happened to put water that was too hot in there. So my mum used an nightie case I had as a gift and placed the hot water bottle in it as it was a perfect size. Here it is, well worn and loved.

When I left home it came with me (I have no idea why but I'm glad it did!)

My Dad's cousin Jackie made this for me with a matching nightdress and I think I must've been 6 when I had it. Except mum thought it was a dress and sent me to a talent contest wearing it. Here I am wearing it at The Savoy Holiday Camp in the Isle of Wight! Gotta love the 70's. After Jackie saw the photo she told mum it was a nightdress so I was saved further embarrassment!

I am sure I inherited alot of my artistic ability but I also watched lots too. Jackie and her cousins Pamela and Jan were always making things and I remember them coming over on a Sunday for the family roast dinner, then knitting or crocheting afterwards. So inspiring. I really looked up to Jackie and spent lots of time with her and was a bridesmaid at her wedding - I can't believe I am doing this but here's a picture of me as a bridesmaid at her wedding back in 1984 when I was a mere 13 (I'm on the right). Don't you just love the pink taffeta and the flick (you can tell I was a Wham fan as that hairdo is very George Michael-ish!!) Such an 80's picture and come to think of it, this dress was made by Pamela's mum.

Anyway, through life you meet lots of inspirational people and sometimes you get to hold on to things they have made with love. Even though I know there are fluffy covered hot water bottle covers out there, no one has this little creature and that's why I love handmade stuff. Just so unique.

A craft store trip

It's been a lovely weekend and the only thing missing really was seeing my mum. I normally visit on a Saturday, but I just had too much to get sorted out ready for Christmas, so I am looking forward to seeing her next week.

On Saturday I managed to finally visit the new Hobbycraft that had opened up in Staines. Since moving this is now my nearest one. I know they are a bit overpriced but I went in determined not to spend any more than I needed. The thing with Hobbycraft is that it pretty much covers most hobbies which means there's tonnes to look at, touch and sigh over. But I was good and only bought what was on my list.

I wanted to make some felt decorations for the kiddies presents (ours and my friends) so I picked up some felt and thread. I will use them to decorate the present with and hopefully if they are good enough they can be used as tree decorations. Least that's the plan. I bought 10 sheets of felt but does anyone know where you can buy this any cheaper in larger sizes? They weren't really expensive but I just feel I could get a better deal (I'm asking as I really want to make more things with felt).

I also wanted to make stockings this year for us all, but my sewing machine is buried in stuff at the house which I am still doing up, so I thought I would buy these and personalise them. They are not brilliant stockings, but I didn't want to spend a fortune as I really want to spend time making lovely, long lasting ones. I guess that will have to be next year now. Still, I plan on making these look nice by giving them an individual look so I will use some of the felt I bought to add names etc to these.

I desperately needed some pinking shears and debated whether to buy Fiskars ones as my dressmaking shears are by them and really good quality. I mulled it over and ended up buying the Hobbycraft ones at half the price. I just hope they are not half the quality either. I also bought a pen to mark out my design on the felt and apparently the ink vanishes by air after 24 hours. Has anyone else used this? I hope it works.

At then Hobbycraft got me at the till. As I queued up they had chocolate bells in a big tub and I gave in and purchased them....still that was the only thing that wasn't on the list so I patted myself on the back!!

I put these on the tree when the kids were in bed and within 30 minutes of Ollie waking up he walked around the tree, stood on tiptoe, held one in his hands and said 'that is locklat'. It's amazing how at 3 and a half children can sniff out chocolate.

I don't know if it's to do with Christmas or not, but I really feel like making and learning lots and lots of crafts. It may have to do with Kirstie's Handmade Britain or all of the lovely Facebook pages I have found recently, but I really want to paint, take photo's, sew, bake and just totally lose myself in crafty things.

Sunday Sketches

Well I have made it for another Sunday Sketches - at least I am consistent with my inconsistency!

I haven't been sketching as much as I would like but I have been sketching some Christmas ideas and doodles, some for cards, some just so that I can let it flow and see what happens. Below are a couple that I did with a Christmas theme (strangely enough!).

Yesterday morning I was recovering from helping my lovely Jim out on an event he was working at. It was a long evening and I didn't get home until 3,30am but we did have lots of fun. From a mere people watching point of view, I loved seeing all the women in their different outfits and the variety of styles. And as for the shoes....wow......I think it was a contest to see who could wear the highest. But it was great and some of the men made a real effort too!

However, children don't understand a 3,30am late night and needless to say it required a lot of energy to keep going throughout the day. So I treated myself to a trip to Hobbycraft where I purchased a few goodies to make some things with.

This morning Jim has another photoshoot with a family which should be fun and then I think he wants to take a few pictures of the kids for the various relatives to send with cards - so a photography and creative filled weekend - perfect!

Oh Happy Day!

This morning on the way in to work I was a bit tired as I stayed up late last night being creative. It was flowing and the time passed so quickly. I didn't want to stop and could easily have painted and sketched and thought up new ideas for at least 2 or 3 more hours. Don't you hate it when that happens. And although I went to bed, I couldn't sleep for a while as my brain was still thinking creatively, even though I was telling it to sleep.

So as I got off the train this morning and walked towards the ticket barriers that lead me into the station, I was tired. But I also heard some singing. And as I walked through the barriers to head to a shop, the singing got louder and louder. It was a Gospel choir and they were singing 'Oh Happy Day'. I couldn't quite see them as there were shops in the way, but it sounded like a dozen or more singers. When I turned the corner and saw them, there were four ladies, in red gowns singing their heart out. They were amazing. They sang with such passion, such glee and with such vigor, like their life depended on it, that it sounded like there should have been more of them. People were smiling and I am sure the commuters felt as uplifted as I did. These four women made such an impact on me and even though I was tired and doing the dreaded commute each day, I felt a sense of gratitude that I could be here to see and listen to them.

I had to nip into a shop and when I came out they were gone. But they did what they were there to do, and that was to bring joy and music to the commuters. Thank you Gospel singers, you made my day.

If only I was there

As much as being creative is my passion, I absolutely love music. And I really wish I was there at this concert. Everyone looked like they were totally enjoying themselves and every time I watch this I smile and it makes the hair stand on the back of my neck. That's when you know you are listening to good music.

A lovely weekend

I hope you all had a nice weekend. It just goes too fast!

Mine was lovely, busy and spent with the family. On Saturday we spent it with my mum and had a lovely day, then Saturday night Jim and I went on a rare date. Off we went to Nando's before heading to the cinema to see Hugo in 3D. It was a really lovely film and there was something quite gentle about it at times. I will say my favourite character was the Station Inspector played by Sacha Baron Cohen - I swear he based his charcter on Inspector Clouseau - he was brilliant!

Then yesterday we put the Christmas tree up so now things are getting quite festive.

Sentimental journey

Last night I had to sew buttons back on jumpers and cardigans, so I got down my trusty sewing box to look for a needle and thread. And I had a real sense of nostalgia as my needles are still stored in a needle case I made when I was at juniors school.

I know it was juniors school as I can remember clearly the classroom I was in as I sat and made this little case. It would have been my last year (so aged 10-11) before moving up to the high school. I have no idea what year it would be classed now not being with it and all.

Anyway, I sat and admired the handiwork….how carefully I had cut it out and stitched around the edges and realised that I had made this almost 30 years ago. Wow. I’d not mislaid it in all those years, but had kept it like it was something precious. I guess now it is….well least to me.

And this needle case is stored in my Nan’s sewing box which was passed to my mum upon my Nan’s death and then given to me some time ago by mum. That and a little pill box are my treasured possessions that were my dear Nan’s.

As I took a picture of this for my blog I realised that I had placed it on a quilt my mum made last year and had given to me. So right there in front of me were 3 generations of craft stuff…..all of which are handmade, either by my family or another crafter.

It’s wonderful that the UK is starting to embrace handmade items again and encouraging us to take up a craft or work at the ones we may already know.

I love it and I hope that in years to come this sewing box, quilt and needle case are enjoyed by the generation below me.

What a lovely thought.

A painting from the archives

The other day I posted a photograph from my archives - one that I used to sell a lot of. So today I thought I would share one of my life drawing paintings. This was done using pastels and I remember my tutor, Fran, pushing me to use the colours of the sarong on her skin, as almost a reflection. I tended to do a lot of my nudes in charcoal and this was the first one I did in pastels. I had THE most amazing time. I felt like I was just touching the surface of what I could achieve. Shortly after this session the classes stopped for a while and then I couldn't make the new term

I really did enjoy creating this study and I hope to join another life class in the not too distant future.

Hope you had a nice evening last night and are looking forward to the weekend. I missed Kirstie's Handmade Britain as for some reason our telly as decided to remove quite a few channels from it's selection....Channel 4 being one of them. Thanks heavens for catch up tv.

Anthony Amos 1950 - 2010

In the November's issue of The Artist magazine there was an article on Anthony Amos. I had never heard of him before but I was immediately drawn to his paintings. These are not something that I would typically hang in my home, but I do have a love of boats (I know these are ships, but are still a form of boat). This scanned image doesn't do it justice, just as I am sure the printed picture in the magazine doesn't either.

I really felt like I could smell the dockyard when I saw his paintings and I loved the looseness of his work. It has such an evocative feel about it.

I am starting to feel better after a head cold which has gone on to my chest, so tonight I plan on doing more on my Paint Free class as it has taken a bit of a back seat lately.

A pretty flower to brighten the day

On my blog header it says 'artist and photographer' and for some reason I tend to post my art more than my photography. So here is one from my archives. I used to sell this as a print on ebay and it has been on wedding invitations, thank you cards and all sorts of things. I love gerbera flowers and I really love this picture.

I came across this video today and it has really interested me. In the last few days I have been intrigued at the process of printing either from wood or lino. It completely fascinates me and I really enjoyed watching the process.

I have a long long list of things I would like to try and this really is one of them. I love how you can use just a few colours and it makes an interesting print. I think there are starter kits you can buy......that's the thing with art, there are so many possibilities but they can be so expensive to buy the bits too!

I definitely want to have a go at this!

Little Noise Sessions

Tuesday night I went to see Elbow at the St John-at-Hackney Church as part of the Little Noise Sessions. These were curated by Radio 1's Jo Whiley in aid of Mencap. All I can say is WOW!

The venue was beautiful and so lovely to see such an amazing group perform to such a small crowd. The last time I saw Elbow was at the O2 in March, so to be at such an imtimate gig with them was really a wonderful experience and one I will cherish.

They are running these small concerts for the rest of the week and I think there may be tickets still available for some of the gigs.

Art and photography are my passions but I would be completely lost without music!

Doodling and sticking

Last night I spent some time doodling, cutting out and sticking and I think I may have just come up with a Christmas card design that I actually like. I have a few ideas for more too! These will be sent to friends and family and if the response is good then I may just create some more for next year and sell them.

Gotta love Wallace and Gromit!

I love it when ideas start to bubble and you start off thinking of one thing and then before you know it it's developed into something else. I will use these old gift tags for the next idea....I knew I kept them for a reason.

Glittery Sunday Afternoon

Today it was foggy and pretty miserable looking outside, so once I had done all the dreaded housework, I promised Daisy that we would have some creative time. Out came the glitter!

Five year olds and glitter are an interesting combination and I have a feeling I will be finding it everywhere in days to come!

Daisy really enjoyed herself and I did too - once I accepted the fact that it's nigh impossible for it not to get everywhere.

A wonderful weekend!

I had an amazing time this weekend at Catherine and Pete's wedding. They chose the most beautiful location in the Lake District for their special day and it was a truly wonderful.

Catherine and Pete met on holiday 22 years ago and she moved from Scotland to 'down south' to be with him. They now live in Preston and are just a truly lovely couple. It seems weird that after 22 years they decided to tie the knot but I am so glad they did. You could see the love between them shining through and I had many a tear in my eye. After 22 years both sides of the families knew each other so well, so the whole wedding was just a real happy, relaxing day (well except for Pete's nerves). It was strange seeing Pete who is normally so laid back, looking nervous.
As a wedding present my lovely Jim took the photo's and I assisted. I hope we have done them proud! (all these photo’s are mine….Jim’s are much better!)

They are off for a few days in the Lakes and then travel to Northumbria and as a surprise Pete bought an old V12 Jag for their trip. Seeing Catherine's face was just the best!

I feel privileged to have been at their wedding and I have known them almost as long as they have known each other. They are a lovely, caring and giving couple who have hearts of gold and I am overjoyed they decided to marry. Who says holiday romances don't last!

Making changes

These last few months have been very up and down for me for various reasons. I guess with highs come the lows and sometimes I wonder why whatever you want becomes so difficult to achieve. I've wanted to bury my head in the sand, or migrate to a sunny, stressfree place where I can relax and have a 6 month holiday.

I wonder how other people cope with the constant day to day challenges of fitting everything in and still feeling like they have time to do little things for themselves. They say that getting what you want can be hard, but worth it in the end and I am really looking forward to that.

I am seeing some light at the end of the very long and dark tunnel and this week I have taken pro-active action to sort areas out in my life that were long over due attention. And it feels so very good. Taking control is empowering and wonderful and safe to say I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I am hoping that when the stress that has been hovering over me like a little black cloud completely disappears that I will have more energy to focus on my creative side. And I am not kidding myself that I won't ever get little black clouds again as life is full of them, but it would be nice not to have some for a while.

And to add to my feelings of happiness at making life changes, I am off to the Lake District today to attend as a guest and assistant to the official photographer (aka Jim) of one of my oldest friends wedding. Catherine has been with Pete for over 22 years and tomorrow they finally tie the knot. I am beyond excited for them.

I've made it to another Sunday Sketch and I have learned not to declare that I will make sure I do one each week (as typically say that is a kiss of death for me), but I will enter as often as I can.

This week I was doodling ideas for Christmas Cards and I doodled up a Father Christmas and put some light watercolours on it. Just having a bit of fun really, but that is what it is all about.

Today I shall be cleaning and putting back all my crockery etc into my new kitchen and then once the floor has been laid it will all be done. Hurrah! Only 5 years after moving in, I now have a new kitchen.

Handmade Britain

Last night after a tiring day at work I settled down on the sofa with a cup of tea and watched Kirstie's Handmade Britain on Channel 4. And I was in heaven. All I can say is that it's wonderful that we are starting to embrace creativity and show programmes on television that encourage us to have a go. And not only that, but the show explores crafts that we may not have thought of trying before, or even known existed.

So there I was sketchbook in hand, doodling ideas for Christmas cards whilst sipping tea and eyeing up birds made of newspaper, cards with paper stitched on and a really funky ring made from an old book.

This is episode 2 out of 8 and I can't wait for the rest. Well done Channel 4 for bringing us such a fab programme.

My work desk

I looked at my desk tonight and thought I would share a picture of what it currently looks like.

I love being nosy at other people's workspaces so thought I would share mine, especially as it is relatively tidy. Click on the picture for a larger image.

I am thinking up ideas for Christmas cards at the moment and would love to use my new pen tablet to draw on the pc but I am just getting used to the way it works. It feels a bit weird at the moment! I am sure this will pass once I start to use it.

Gruffalo party time

I made a Gruffalo invitation for my friend's little boys second birthday party recently and she asked if I could create a menu to give to the children so they could select the food they wanted in their little lunch bag.

So I set to work and instead of painting this one I decided to really try and get to grips with Photoshop. Over the years I have used it but I really do have a limited knowledge. Fortunately Jim doesn't and after installing a Wacom pen tablet on my laptop (which I have had for 2 years but never used), I decided to use it and have some fun. Again with help from Jim we got it up and running and then I just played about.

Here's the menu as it is right now. Not sure I will change anything else as my friend loves it....it just depends on how well it prints as I hope the background won't be too 'busy' once printed.

Watch out there's a Gruffalo about!

Ages ago I created a Charlie and Lola party invite for my best friends daughters 5th Birthday party. And I loved every minute of it. I learned lots in photoshop thanks to my lovely Jim and I was quite pleased with the invite. You can see it here. It's now approaching her 2 year olds birthday party and I have been given the task of producing a Gruffalo themed invite, so last night I got stuck in!

As I was waiting for the wash to dry I looked around and my other paintings winked at me.....so I got out my yellow acrylic ink and did some drizzling. Then sprayed water over it and tilted the canvas until I liked how it looked.

I also decided where I wanted the flowers to be and used the children's numbered tubs to draw round for perfect circles. And to think I nearly chucked these away - these are perfect as you have all different size circles!

And once done, I laid the canvas flat to dry.

I will do some more to the invites tonight as my 'client' is very demanding :o)

Good times

I had a lovely weekend as it was spent with friends and family and lots of children. My best friends little boy is 4 on Tuesday and she threw a party for him at one of those indoor activity play centres yesterday. Needless to say Daisy had a brilliant time and slept all the way home.

This week I will finish off Gruffalo party invites for my best friends youngest boy who will be 2 in November. So quite looking forward to that!

Unfinished Symphony

I currently have four unfinished paintings. One here which was started ages and ages ago. This one which drove me to distraction so I opted to leave it for a while and these two, which have just sat on my easel patiently waiting.

How am I ever going to exhibit if I don't finish them.

I also find it strange that on Tuesday I posted about not being sure how often I will be able to blog at the moment, and here I am three days running, blogging. Maybe giving myself the freedom and permission not to have to blog every day makes me want to. Or maybe I am contrary.

Anyway, I will leave you with a picture of my cat who is no longer with us. Mainly because I think she was beautiful and I wanted a cat picture to brighten up my post. Wow, I really really do miss my cat. She was a real character as most animals are.

A magnificant human being

I switched on the computer today and saw the news that Steve Jobs passed away yesterday at the tender age of 56.

This man was a genius, a visionary and inspirational and it is so sad that he now is no longer with us. I am lost for words.

If you have time I would recommend watching this commencement speech back in 2005 when he addressed Standford University. It is awesome. The strange thing was, I watched it again yesterday lunchtime....

Taking stock and a video

Kind of lacking inspiration at the moment, so I’ve been looking at some blogs, watching videos and trying to get motivated.

I think this girl can only juggle so much in life and right now she needs a break. Not sure what this looks like and for how long but all I know is that I won’t beat myself up if I don’t blog or paint. Sometimes we need time to recoup and take stock and make decisions.

It's been a crazy busy week which always means my art and blogging suffer. However I did find time to go the the BP Portrait Exhibition 2011 at the National Gallery last week before the exhibition ended. Considering I walk past the Gallery every day it took me a while to make it!

This painting of George O'Dowd aka Boy George by Layla Lyons just blew me away. This photograph does not do it justice as it is far more colourful in person, and at almost 2 metres in height it really has an amazing impact. If I was Boy George, I would be over the moon with this portrait. What I loved most was seeing it up close, seeing the brush strokes and then standing back and feeling blown away by it! Very Inspirational!

I hope to have more painting time this week and an update on some works in progress.

I am in love

I was looking online last week for ideas for my wedding. I love the idea of a 50's themed wedding but I am not too sure I would suit the dress. However, it doesn't stop me from falling in love with them. I will post my findings as and when I can and right now I have to show you this dress. I can imagine Carrie Bradshaw from SITC wearing it. It just made me gasp when I saw it!

I am so in love with this dress. The designer and creator of this dreamy dress is Brighton based Joanne Fleming. You can find her blog here and also if you search Joanne Fleming Design on Facebook you can find her page. I highly suggest you like it!

I have to say that her dresses are just wonderful and all so individual. I am all for supporting local artists, whether they are potters, knitters, dressmakers, musicians or painters. And I am blown away at the talent we have in this country.

Talking of art, I have been cleaning out my studio space the last few nights as it's incredibly messy, and as I don't mind working in a mess it gets to the point where eventually I can't stand it any more. I will post up some more pictures soon of the paintings I started last week.

When I don’t paint or create I feel like something major is missing from my life. I feel restless, frustrated and sometimes miserable.

Wise words from countless successful artists.....paint every day or as often as you can. It doesn’t always matter what but the fact that you are taking action generates activities which can in turn generate success.

So it seems I need to paint more, stop wasting time on the internet and do a little every day.

Forest Garden

Here's my finished painting. It's like nothing I have painted before and I have used lots of different techniques and methods and really enjoyed the process.

I used inks, pencil, acrylic, surgical spirit and lots of water. I let the paint run, drip and splash. I had no agenda as to how I wanted the final picture to end up.....all I knew was that I wanted to be guided by instinct and that is what happened.

Anyway, here it is and it's also in time for Paint Party Friday - yay!

I will be posting more on this making of this painting soon, but in the meantime, take care and have a wonderful Friday.

Jim sent me an email this morning with a quote from Steve Jobs which I just have to share. It is very inspirational. I also urge you to either read his speech or watch it on You Tube as it is amazing.

Here's the quote;

I've added some more flowers and things to the painting, but still have more to do. It's funny how in a painting there are some things you love and they are usually a result of a happy accident.

Feeling quite emotionally drained as the last few days have taken it out of me, so the comfort of painting is doing me good.

A painting in progress

Here is a glimpse of the painting I started yesterday. Really not sure where this is heading, but I am just enjoying the process to see where it takes me. I played about with different techniques and I enjoyed it. I must remember to let go of worrying about the final result and embrace the creation of the final painting.

Healing with my paints

I've had a tough few days and yesterday my beautiful cat Pipa sadly had to be put to sleep - it was probably one of the most heart breaking things I have had to do. At almost 17 she had a good innings and was a real character and this picture below that Jim took really sums her up. I will miss her so very much.

So today I am taking some time out for me and starting on a new painting I want to hang in my bedroom. I need some artwork to compliment the white walls and as there is green in the room I need to do a green coloured picture.

I have no idea where it will lead or how it will turn out. I hadn't intended on using brown but sometimes a painting tells you what it wants and I am going with that. I also wanted a folk art style picture, but I will just go with the flow.

I am grateful for the friends and family I have right now who are being so supportive to me. Anyone who is an animal lover will understand how I am feeling.

We should learn from the past

Yesterday I mentioned how disgusted I was at the events happening in London. These have unfortunately spread across the country and mindless youths are being sheep like and jumping on the rioting bandwagon.

As I went to bed last night I thought about my dear Dad who would have some wise words to say about the current situation. And I missed being able to give him a call and chat to him. We could always have a good debate and it's such a shame that now I am older and hopefully wiser, I can't sit down with him over a cuppa and listen to him.

A comment Valerie made on my blog yesterday made me think about my Dad. He was brought up in the war and lived in a council flat where community spirit was high. Everyone looked out for each other and more importantly cared for each other. They respected their elders and of course the police.

My Dad worked hard all his life. He always told us that he had to put newspaper in his shoes to fill in the holes, that he had to wear shorts in winter as his family couldn't afford long trousers and that he had to help bring up his brothers and sister.

He studied to be an accountant by way of an apprenticeship and even set up and run a loan club where in those days money was hard. He met my mum and they bought our house and had little furniture...he frequently told us that they sat on a plank of wood across two milk crates as they couldn't afford a sofa. And throughout his life he worked for what he had. We were not rich, but comfortable, and now being older I can see how much he did for us.

Mum worked too from being in service, to a printer and then when my brother and I were little, she worked part time in a greengrocers. When her feet couldn't take it any longer and we were in our teens, she went back to college to study book keeping. Both my parents worked hard to provide for us.

They also disciplined us without fail and this was in the days where a smack was acceptable and you didn't back chat your parents.

As a society we are too weak. We worry about being sued. We can't do this or we can't do that and there is too much political correctness. Jim was telling me that when his 4 and half year old daughter Daisy starts school in September he has been told she is not allowed to help a child up if she falls, but instead get a teacher. And he questioned this, as Daisy is a really caring little girl. How on earth are we to bring up our children to be caring and loving, when those in authority who they are supposed to respect, stop them from being able to care and tell them they cant.

Just what sort of a society are we creating. Oh yes that's right....a society that loots and riots and is violent to those people who work hard, pay their taxes and want to invest in their future.

God help us!

What is this world coming to?

I had an early night last night and I woke up this morning to see footage and pictures of London in flames.

I am disgusted and saddened by everything that is happening in my home town. Where I was born and raised to treat people with love and respect. Do unto others as you would have done unto you.

And in the news I see pictures of thugs not brave enough to show their faces but brave enough to throw firebombs, bricks and other items to harm their neighbours and police.

I have never expressed my political views on here but today I feel the urge. In the days of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher they both had wars and strikes and financial crisis's to deal with, but they also had strength, courage and did not give in to pressures. They stood tall and proud. I feel our government could learn a lot from them both.

I hope everyone who is in an area that is affected is safe and lets pray that these riots end as quickly as they have started.

Healthy Turkey Burgers

Last night I tried a new recipe for turkey burgers and I couldn't believe how delicious they were. I've not tried them before so was a bit dubious. The recipe came from a Weight Watchers book and each burger is worth 4 points. However, the recipe said it makes 4 burgers but I easily got 5 out of them, so that would make each burger 3.5 points (well it's 3.2 but WW works in halfs).

Anyway, as they were so lovely I thought I would share the recipe. And may I say, these are so quick to make that it's perfect for a quick meal with salad.

What you'll need

500g Turkey mince

Small onion - the recipe said grated but I preferred it chopped

Clove garlic crushed - I used a cheats garlic as I had run out of real garlic, so just a little squirt was all I used

Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

Pinch of black pepper

Tablespoon of mild chilli relish

Low fat spray

After I chopped the onions I added them to the mince along with all the other ingredients and gave it a real good stir.

Once it's all combined divide it into 4 or 5 burgers. Heat a pan and spray with the low fat cooking oil.

Add the burgers and flatten each one slightly. Cook over a a steady medium heat for about 5 mins each side. It says if you over cook them they will become dry. I am always worried about undercooking white meat, so I did end up giving them a little longer and they were not dry at all.

As I was having salad with this, I had par boiled some new potatoes, covered them in garlic and a bit of butter (not healthy I know) and then cooked in the oven for about 30 mins on gas 6.

I also added some bacon to the top. Again, not overly healthy but I had bacon I needed to use up and I am glad I did!

So there you have it. There is a burger under that bacon I promise. Jim loved these so much and he is a real red meat eater and as I am not a beef burger fan I wasn't sure if I would, but they were incredibly delicious. I would definitely make these again and also for a BBQ too!

Exhibiting

Over the past year I have had a few opportunities to exhibit my art work but they have all fallen through for various reasons. The last time I was geared up to exhibit and promote my artwork the venue decided that they were not going to do this anymore (it was a well known pub in London that exhibited artwork on a monthly basis). So I kind of gave up.

I was contacted this week by the local council inviting the art group (which has sadly disbanded) into exhibiting in the foyer of their local theatre which has a good footflow. It's all in talks at the moment as this is a new initiative for them, but regardless whether they choose to go ahead or not I have decided that I will find somewhere to exhibit my work - art and photography. It's a step I have wanted to take for a while now and it's about time I did.

This does mean that I have to create lots of paintings and take lots of photo's- such a hard life!

Just can't get it right

I am finding this really hard and I don't know why. This scene is completely from my head and if I hadn't painted like this before, then I would think that is the problem.

I started to use a brush on the sky but I wasn't getting the look I was after. So I returned to the palette knife which was how I started off the painting and started laying on paint. Then I had an accident and smudged white paint on the dark part of the sky, so ended up painting over it. But I suddenly started painting really bold and slapped the paint on. I loved doing it. I had fun - which is the main thing - but I am still not happy with it. It feels like I have been painting this forever. I had to stop to let the paint dry as I was just smudging it all over the place.

So I left it for another night. I want to start on another painting but if I do then I know that this one will never be finished.

A new week....

I didnt' get much of a chance to be arty this weekend as I wasn't well for most of the time....and then there is always the annoying 'other stuff' to do when I started to feel better. But I plan to do some this week. I bought some new canvases ready for my paint free class and I can't wait to get stuck into the lessons.

I miss painting but I also have so much planning to do with other aspects of my life that time just runs away. If only I wasn't working full time eh!

Okay I am extremely excited as it's Paint Free time with the wonderful and inspiring Wyanne. This was my birthday present from Jim back in May and it's now time to take up the class. which has changed slightly as you also get an e-book.

I have wanted to do this course since it first began last year so this was a perfect birthday pressie. I am so looking forward to being part of this community, of learning new stuff and of course, painting!

I will share my journey not only in the private forum but on here too and if I've said it once, I'll say it again, I really cannot wait!

A bit of a tidy up

When I was unable to paint due to my hand operation I decided to clean up my blog a little bit. Make it less cluttered and personalise it some more. It was about time!

So I've made some changes to it. Apart from a different background and header, there are now tabs where you can buy my work, see videos, gallery, links to other sites and of course a tab dedicated to my lovely Jim's work, I will be evolving this over time and adding more content, but I hope you like what I have done so far.

I have also added a link to my facebook fan page (feel free to like it!!) and also where you can follow me tweeting.

Station approach

Jim and I went for a date tonight and as we were at Waterloo station waiting for the train home I took a quick snap of the other commuters by holding my phone down low and just pressing the button when someone came into the frame. This one happens to be my favourite as I love the movement.

I've got two days off now so looking forward to not setting my alarm for 5.30am!

The storm continues

The transition continues and I am still looking at the sky and watching it evolve....just like the real skies when a storm is brewing.

This is how it looked before I went to bed the previous night as I had another little dabble.

And I digress to show you my paintbrush. As I was using it I realised that I have had this brush for as long as I have painted using acrylics.....and that is some time. Looking after your brushes pays off I say and I love the feel of it right now...not new at all - like a trusty friend!

Anyway, back to the painting. It's coming along and but it's not quite there yet. When it is I shall know!

So this is as it is right now and I will have another bash soon. I need to do something to the clouds on the middle top right but I don't want them to look like they have come straight from the Simpsons....I want them a bit abstract. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Okay, well I will catch you later on and if I can, I will add this to Paint Party Friday! I haven't been able to post there much so it's good to be back!

My scrapbook ~ 1980's style

Least that is what Jim calls it. Okay, it does look very 1980's and something I would have used when I was younger....oh dear, if that's the case then maybe it should be renamed 1970's scrapbook!!

So what is this hideous looking book that deserves to be covered? Well it's somewhere I keep inspirational pictures that I love. Snippets of colour that work together and other random witterings to do with art.

I have read in various books, magazines and blogs that as well as keeping a sketchbook it's also good to keep ideas that inspire you. It's also a good way to see if I have a preference in style etc. And looking at what I have collected so far I can see a pattern of boats, harbours, houses and jettys. Hmmnnn seeing as I love the sea so much there's no surprise there then!

I have a lot of art magazines which are cluttering up the place. So I've decided that once I've read the articles, noted exhibitions and generally absorbed the magazine, I will go through, cut out the pictures that inspire me, make a note of the artist and keep it for reference. In no way do I intend to copy another artists work, but I like to look at other artists techniques and learn from them. Call it research.

I also cut out articles on how to do stuff.

Basically this 1980's scrapbook is for inspiration and tips, to see what colours I am drawn to and anything else that takes my fancy.

From calm to stormy

So this is the picture that I decided to change a bit last night. It has gone through so many transformations and I am just not happy with some of it. The sky is too blah (for want of a better word) and I have already started to blot out the fence posts.

This is the first time I have been able to paint since my hand operation and I really couldn't wait to get started.

I started to lay a base down for some dramatic clouds although this isn't very easy to photograph in artificial light. I needed to walk away from it as if I don't do that I am not always able to see what needs to be changed. Sometimes I hold the picture up to a mirror and look at the reflection as I find seeing it from another angle helps.

Ideally I need to work on other paintings at the same time to use up the paint and to keep me going when I am in the painting groove.

I love the texture in the beach.I went back to it before I went to bed and it's looking different again. I had lots of fun and look forward to carrying on with it later.

Relaxation in the way of priming

Last night I went through my old canvases which had unfinished paintings on them, some I had finished and some I was just plain unsure about. And I primed over them ready for a new painting to take it's place.

Art materials cost a bomb and I couldn't see the point of keeping a painting I didn't like so I am joining the ranks of the masters as they often re-used canvases.

There's something quite meditative about applying the primer and seeing the old painting disappear. I like the textures you can get when painting over an old painting....it can make an interesting effect. The primer I use is Winsor & Newton and it gives a great key to work on. This one I got in what appears to be the continual sale at Cass Art....THE best and cheapest shop in London for art supplies.

Now I just have to try and paint a masterpiece.

I've been meaning to blog about this for over a week now and at last I have been able to.

Isn't this just lovely!! A gift to myself made by the very talented and lovely Kelly Berkey. To remind me every day that I am an artist and can be who I want to be.

Look at the lovely presentation box and card with a lovely handwritten note inside. And it arrived all the way from the USA much quicker than I thought!

A nice way to wake up...

I woke up this morning to see that I had sold my St Ives painting. What a nice way to start my day!

I tried a different technique when painting this scene which was taken from my trip to St Ives last year (that place has such a special place in my heart). I wanted to be a bit more abstract so used cardboard and old credit cards to make the linear marks. I used a limited palette to try and bring some peace and harmony to the painting. I had lots of fun creating this and I am delighted that it has now found itself a new home.

I am an artist

The other day I stopped and realised just how far I have come in my art journey. I have set myself goals (working for a training company during the day kind of makes me realise how important these are) and the other day I looked back at where I was just over 2 years ago. I didn't believe I had what it took to be an artist.

I felt that everyone was more talented than me, that my work was awful and that how could I call myself an artist. The amazing realisation over the past 2 years, but more so in the last 6 months has made me recognise that I can say exactly that. My art is different to others, and may not be to everyone's taste, it may not always turn out how I wanted it,but it's a product of me and I need to be proud of that.

I need to not be embarrassed about showing people my work, or letting people know that I have just finished a painting. I need to be proud of what I can produce, whether it's a painting, a photograph or anything else creative. We are so caught up in trying to be better than we are that how often do we look back to see what we have achieved.

We are all different and should embrace those differences as after all, there is always someone out there that loves our art for what it is.

A little break

Sorry I have been absent of late. I had hoped I would be back on track by now, painting lots and having some more art to show. But the hand has taken longer to heal and time with the family has been the order of the day. So I'm not complaining.

The good news is that my hand is healing up nicely, albeit longer than I ever expected, so I hope to get back to the painting soon. In the meantime I have been tidying up this blog a bit, researching painting techniques and taking some time to relax.

An update

Thank you for your kind comments yesterday about my hand.

I’ve not mentioned it before now, mainly as I could only type one handed with my left hand (and I am right handed)........and well the hand was a bit sore.

I had a trigger finger on my right hand, which meant it wouldn’t bend properly and then it would sometimes lock in the closed position. So the surgeon had to cut the tendon and perform some magic. As you can see from the pictures, the bandage has become smaller and the stitches are due to come out this Friday. I hope then that I won’t have to be bandaged up anymore, although I don’t think that will somehow be the case.

I am a bit fed up with it now to be honest, but I remind myself that I am grateful to have a hand at all, as some people are not as lucky.

Although I don’t mind getting out of the washing up, I am feeling frustrated at not being able to paint. I miss it so much. More than I ever thought I could. I had just got into a groove of painting every week and now it’s all on hold. I know it won’t be forever and the operation was needed, but it just makes it hard. I did try some left handed painting but it wasn’t happening.

I am getting more movement in my hand as I can now type using bandaged fingers which I certainly couldn’t do before now, so I may try some sketching. Holding a knife is hard and writing is difficult, but hey, this may well give me the abstract element I am looking to achieve.

Before the operation I was more nervous about everything going wrong and never being able to use my right hand again – drastic I know – but being an artist, that was a big fear for me. So I am hoping that I will have a hand back in action again soon.

In the meantime, I will enjoy reading other blogs, researching painting ideas and being grateful.

Sorry I've been a bit quiet but I have had a hand operation and it's put paid to a lot of things. However, I am delighted to be back with an interview with the very talented Claire Leggett. I cannot remember exactly how I stumbled across her blog, but since that day I have been fascinated by her artwork. She has a wonderful unique style and her blog is always a delight to read.

So without further ado, kick off your shoes, put the phone on silent and enjoy!
Where is home for you?
Home is an Edwardian house four miles outside of Birmingham city center in the UK.

How many years have you been painting?
One answer is “For ever” because I painted as a child, but in a formal sense after secondary school I completed a foundation year in 1997 (ouch! I’m old!) and then went on to do a three year degree in Fashion and Textiles, specialising in printed textiles. I quickly got side tracked into teaching Infant children (which I actually love) and it wasn’t until about 2002 that I dusted off my art supplies and began to fulfill my artistic needs again.

Other than creating wonderful paintings, what other creative things do you do?
Loads - I love making quilts, sewing, crochet, knitting, gardening, baking and especially decorating cakes. There are usually one or two projects on the go.

Your studio looks lovely and I’m very envious, what is the best thing about it?
My studio is fantastic! I realise what a lucky girl I am. Best thing, hmmm…having my own space to mess up as and how I like. It’s at the top of the house so it’s quiet and I like retreating to it.

I love your paintings and the different contrasting patterns you have. How do you go about putting a still life together? What is your inspiration?
It‘s instinctive to me. A lot of people try to develop a USP (Unique Selling Point) I happened upon mine while practicing and trying to just be me. I love fabrics and patterns and china and a mismatch and a clash of colours and certain objects that just appeal. I couldn’t try to do it like that – I can’t paint differently or see in things in any other way.

I’m inspired by other artists work that I like, I clip out magazine spreads that appeal whether that is a home magazine with a décor scheme that I like the colours of or maybe a sales feature on china that prompts a still life set up idea, flowers from the florists or plants I see in the garden center. Anything and everything!

What colours are in your palette and is there one colour you could not do without?
I think when I see my work side by side on my gallery page that certain colours are prevalent. Turquoise, pink and red reoccur at lot. But if I could only have one colour then it’s pink. It’s such a happy colour that I’d be sad if you took it from me!

Where do you get your objects from?
Junk shops finds, china from Anthropologie and Pip Studio, nice gift shops, Ebay sometimes, through magazine features, Cotton Patch fabric shop and other online stores, when traveling (Paper Source was a great find in Philadelphia when we were there). I’m a bit of a magpie and as I get older I’m happier to just buy and trust my instincts.

What is a typical day for you?
A typical week would see me in school Monday to Wednesday teaching. Tuesday is a half-day for me and I try and use that for housewifely things so that Thursday and Friday can be interruption free studio days. I usually have an idea what I’m going to set up to work on, by Wed night. So Thursday will begin by putting it together, drawing it and applying the background wash. Only then is it coffee time! I listen to radio plays while I’m working because I find it is the one thing that can silence the conscious part of my brain and let my instinctive side get on with it’s thing. I usually work till about 5 or 6pm. If I’m on creative overload I might work for longer or grab time over the weekend as it presents itself.

Congratulations on being represented by galleries. How did that come about and how did you feel when you saw your work for sale for the first time.
My first foray into exhibiting was at the RBSA I had an epiphany moment when I thought to myself ‘How could I start right now, here in the place where I live’. I did a google search and found it. I had known about Purple Gallery for a while. For that I did my research, took a deep breath and jumped.

It is very surreal seeing your work up for sale on a wall. When I see my work, I see me staring back. I find it hard to be objective. But once I’ve pushed that aside I feel elated, humble, excited, grateful, encouraged and over the moon.

Which artists, dead or alive, inspire you?
I am constantly discovering new ones. Today I discovered Harold Harvey! (Who? Go google him) I would hands down just love to be Kaffe Fassett’s female artistic clone, followed by being anyone who works for Anthropologie designing patterns for products, followed a close third by being Tricia Guild’s clone (Designers Guild). I love the painters Winifred Nicholson and Mary Fedden as not only their work but the way they lived, inspires me to paint surrounded by my home and family. Jean Martin has had a big influence on me in recent years. Her work is still the place I’m hoping to arrive at some day in terms of its complexity and inventiveness. My husband bought me a piece of hers for my 40th birthday and I visit it like a shrine! In terms of business inspiration I have found the artist Kelly Rae Roberts ecourse and book Flying Lessons really important in giving my dreams firstly some validation and then some structure in how to go about seeing them realised.

What do you love most about ‘blogland’?
The wealth of inspiration out there at the touch of a button, the community of like minded people, the friends I have made who turn up to leave comments cheering me on, the world wide nature of the contacts you can make and the traveling you can do without getting out of bed.

Have you an ambition which is yet unfulfilled?
Apart from being a Kaffe Fassett clone or being employed by Anthropologie or becoming Amy Butler or Anna Maria Horner…

I hope somewhere in the future that this could be my fulltime job and I’d have time to paint and design patterns and see what happens.

What advice would you give any aspiring artists?
Prepare to plod. Quick success can be fleeting. Look for the longer journey it’s less disappointing and more valuable anyway.

Read, blog, talk to people who will cheer you on no matter what., and learn to tune out the doubters! Just keep turning up to work and the rest will follow in time. Be true to yourself.

Talented people

It's Saturday morning, I do not need to get up early and commute in to London and here I am awake before 7am! I wonder if it's an age thing....needing to go to bed earlier so you are up earlier. Anywho I am browsing blogs through my google reader, drinking tea and eyeing up my sketchbook. I feel a doodle coming on.

Becoming aware

Inspired by this post and this video, I made the time to paint last night. And it was as ever, wonderful. Fellow painters will know exactly what I mean. Loading the palette knife with paint and being bold on a painting that I really didn’t like, was fun and liberating. I've still a long way to go on it, but I wanted to see some texture on the painting - it was too flat. Here's a snapshot of part of it.

Experience is such as a great thing as I can now look at one of my paintings and actually work out what it is I don’t like and know how to fix it, rather than thinking ‘something’s not quite right’ but just being bogged down in the picture to actually see it. I still have a long long way to go, but I realised last night that I have learned a lot over the years.

I admire artists who produce work of an abstract nature. I especially love those paintings that you can tell exactly what it is and yet be entranced at their brush strokes and their mark makings. I will post some more about this another time.

I hope you all had a lovely evening. After painting whilst listening to Bonnie Rait, I then made dinner for me and Jim and then not long after that headed for bed.

I'm still here part II

So there she sits and waits patiently for me to return. To pick up the brush and palette knife and redo her. And my desk is littered with stuff that isn't conducive to painting.

But hey, thanks to lots more work from my lovely Jim we are getting somewhere with the cottage renovations. It's funny, but when you are near to completing something which means you can make life changing decisions, it all starts to get a bit scary. Crazy eh!

Apart from the usual stuff going on, I turned 40 the other week and this is where my life now officially begins. And for my present, lovely Jim bought me Wyanne's Paint Free class and I am over the moon. I have yearned for this in ages and I am so very lucky.

Life is good. It's not easy but it's filled with amazing people who I love and care for, so what more could a girl want (other than canvases, paints and wonderful classes!!)

This months Blogs from Around the World returns to the USA. I have been a follower of Wyanne's work for some time now, ever since I stumbled across one of her You Tube video's demonstrating her amazing paintings, so I was really excited when she agreed to be a part of this.

I absolutely adore Wyanne's paintings and her use of resin makes me want to have a go. I hope you enjoy this article and please stop by her blog and website, you wont be disappointed.
Where is home for your and what do you love best about it?

The tranquil and gorgeous Amelia Island, Florida has been my home for the past four years. Prior to that, I lived in the hectic city of Atlanta, GA. I visited the historic Fernandina Beach downtown area on vacation one year, and knew I had to live here. My husband and kids fell in love with it, too. The island has a strong arts community and is breathtakingly gorgeous. It hasn't been over-developed with high-rise buildings and such. The island is only 13 miles long and 4 miles wide. Recently, my husband went back to work in Atlanta full-time. So, I split my time up between Atlanta and the island. It's really nice to be able to enjoy the best of both worlds now.

How long have you been painting and making jewellery?

I started painting and creating jewelry around the age of 13. I was adopted, and had learned that my natural birth mother was an artist. So, I just picked up a paintbrush and started practicing in an effort to be like her. I went on to recieve my batchelor's degree in fine arts from Wesleyan College, with a major in photography.

How has your work changed over the years?

In college, my main focus was fine art photography. After graduating, I worked as a professional photographer in the interior design industry. I didn't enjoy it very much because of the lack of creativity. I opened two art galleries in the Atlanta area and went through a period that I didn't create and simply guided other artists. I gradually started painting again and produced a whimsical series called, Big Divas. They were bold, colorful, simplistic watercolor paintings. After my daughter was born, I started experimenting with acrylics and collage. I began painting whimsical big - eyed girls on canvas and wood with beeswax encaustic finishes. Now, I still paint the big-eyed girls but my interest lies in really pushing myself out of my comfort zone artistically. I am concentrating more on loosening up my painting style, and combining unusual art materials. I want to create works that are emotionally, technically and visually more complex.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Most of my inspiration comes from growing up in the 60's and 70's, my daughter, my own imagination and emotions. When I paint, I usually prefer to work in silence. If I listen to music while I paint, I feel that it influences the work too much.

I loved your 'Post Wolf' picture which was more daring than some of your other work, how did that idea originate?

Post Wolf began (as most of my paintings do) from simply playing with couple of colors of paint and allowing them to flow and intermingle across the paper on their own. After they dried, I studied and found different images within them, like leaves, flowers and part of a figure. Then, I let my imagination run wild and composed the rest of the painting. As I do this, certain feelings and emotions from events in my life start to make their way into the painting, but I try to keep them from being a literal translation. I don't want to bombard the viewer with my feelings or thoughts, but give them enough that they can relate on some level to the painting. I try not to talk about my personal meaning within the painting, because it would take away from someone else's story. It's more important to me for the viewer to be moved in their own personal way from the work, than it is to tell my story behind it.

What medium, tool or equipment couldn't you be without?

I would have to say acrylic paints, because they are so versatile.

What artist(s) dead or alive inspire you?

Andy Warhol, Picasso, Matisse, Rex Ray, Alexandra Nechita, Nicholas Simmons, and so many more. But, I try to be careful and not look at other artists work too much. I believe, as artists, we are natural sponges. Whether we realize it or not, we see things and file them away in our brains. When we least expect it, those things make their way back into our work in some form or another.

How long does it take to put your amazing videos together?

About as long as it takes to paint the painting! I enjoy the chronicle of my work, but each time I'm slaving over the computer doing video editing...I think to myself...I could be painting instead. Then the video is uploaded, and people leave the kindest, most inspiring comments...and I forget just how hard it was.

I have yet to join your Paint Free class though it's on my to do list for this year, how did that come about and what have you learned personally from it?

I hope you do find the time to take it. I feel it's the best class that I've ever done, and I have been amazed at how it has changed so many artist's lives. I developed Paint Free from my own needs and goals as an artist. Over the years, I've learned how to juggle being a mom, full-time career artist and provider for my family. I've had my share of self doubt, comparison and growing pains, just like any artist. I taught myself different ways to manage all of these issues, and decided to document and share them in Paint Free. I have also grown increasingly weary of artists copying other artists. I wanted to show students that their work doesn't need to look like another artist's work to be considered good. I am a big believer that everyone has their own painting style if they will just allow it to come out. I've learned that it doesn't matter if you've never painted in your life, or if you paint everyday with a boatload of techniques.....that a great painting is created from your energy alone.

Do you have any other classes in the pipeline?

Yes, I have a new one opening August 1st called Layers, Passages and Hideaways. We will be working with multiple layers in paintings through paint, acrylic mediums and collage. Also the class will teach expanding paintings with sculptural, three dimensional passages and hideaways in canvas and wood.

What's next for Wyanne?

I will be traveling to teach Paint Free workshops in person. I hope to publish Paint Free as a book, to reach more artists. I recently licensed my artwork to a large global wholesale company in the gift and home accessories industry. "The WyanneCollection" will be released in January, 2012. I'm very excited about it. But, most of all...I want to continue creating paintings that challenge me artistically, emotionally and technically. I feel that I've only just begun to scratch the surface.

A good night's sleep

It's amazing how much a good night's sleep does wonders.

Yesterday after a busy day at work I arrived home with a long list of things to do. I have a really busy week and have lots of things to sort out. I did a few things, then had some dinner but wasn't feeling too well, so ended up lying on the bed. And that was it. I was asleep for the rest of the evening.

I woke up this morning feeling so refreshed and proceeded to talk to Jim at 90mph about lots of things that had to be done, emails from friends etc etc. Poor love couldn't wait for me to leave for work so he could get some peace.

Usually I beat myself up for not getting everything done I had wanted to do, but not anymore. I need to listen to my body and make sure I look after myself.

A time of change and impatience

Today I am feeling lots of emotions. I am making progress on my cottage, and by the end of this week I will have a new bathroom. After a dodgy pink suite for years it will be a shock to see a white one there, but a lovely shock at that. Other rooms are beginning to take shape and there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

I haven't created in a while and I am like a light bulb slowly fading when that happens. Looking at other blogs, seeing bright pictures of studios, seeing amazing artwork makes me feel all sort of things - excited, envious, happy, restless, in awe and impatient. I want it all now and it's hard to wait for my turn.

I feel like a butterfly waiting to fly it's bright tiny wings for the first time.

Patience is what I need xx

A busy week...

You know when I mentioned in this post about my blogging and art having to take a back seat…..well I am afraid to say it has.

My old railway cottage has been calling me as I needed to get her pretty again. The previous owners lived there for some thirty years and raised their family in the house and even though it was decorated very badly when I first viewed it some four and a half years ago, I could feel the love and warmth in the house.

Now here I am some time later only just getting round to the bathroom and my bedroom. Other rooms have been done and when it’s all finished I will take some proper photographs for you all to see.

The hardest part in buying an old cottage where when it was first built in the 1800’s the water was lugged from a well….is that all the walls are bumpy, crumbling in places and not at all straight. It makes things so much harder. Not helped by the fact that the previous owner just painted and papered over existing layers making it a hard job to strip back.

Anyway, lovely Jim has worked so hard and together we are getting there. Here are some pictures of our week at work and we still have a long way to go……

I thank my lucky stars that I have an amazing creative soul mate who suggested yesterday I stop working on our marketing and go and paint. To pick up those paintbrushes and carry on with the painting I was working on.

And that was exactly what I did. I put on a radio station that plays old rock songs, sang away rather badly and let the creativity flow.

Brighton Beach

Sorry I've not been around much but it's all gone a bit mad really!

House renovations, children, family, friends, photoshoots and the like hasn't left me much time or energy for blogging!

In the UK we have had two long four day weekends on the trot and I have loved every minute of them. I've seen family, friends, done stuff to the house, played in the park, ogled from afar at this photoshoot, helped photograph a childs 4th birthday party, helped market my lovely Jim's event business, watched a Royal Wedding a great band called The Slammers play, and those are the things I can remember.

So not much time to paint and the like.

I had a feeling it would get like this a little while ago and I hope to catch up with your blogs soon and get back to my Sunday Sketches too - I've missed it!

What’s the best thing about your job?

I’m very lucky to have such a creative job, one that not only allows me to use my love of drawing, but also to indulge my sense of humour. It’s especially lovely to have such a tangible end result, which I can then share with children.

Do you listen to music whilst you work and if so is there anything which helps you create?

While I am working on my pastel artwork, I listen to talking books, which keep me calm and content, and stop me stressing too much. I listen to music while I am doing my roughs though, as the continual problem-solving and occasional deep concentration make it impossible to follow a story.

What were your favourite books to read as a child?

My first love was Dr Seuss, especially The Cat in the Hat. Later, I was a big fan of Enid Blyton, initially her younger series like The Faraway Tree and The Wishing Chair, then the Famous Five and Secret Seven books. After that I remember getting very into Agatha Christie.

How did you become a children’s illustrator?

My degree was in Printed Textiles, but I got fed up with always being asked to paint flowers; I wanted to draw all sorts of things. I specialised in various different kinds of illustration before I found children’s books, including 10 years as a freelance Editorial Illustrator. That taught me how to interpret text and to illustrate the meaning behind the words, rather than the words themselves, which has made me a better book illustrator.

I got my first book after taking a speculative folio of illustrations to show various children’s publishers. I’d done a pastel drawing of some singing dogs and Gullane had the text for The Show at Rickety Barn by Jemma Beeke, which stars Jasper, a cat who fancies himself as a singer. Gullane’s Art Director could instantly see what I would do with Jasper and the rest is history.

You illustrate in pastels, but do you use any other mediums?

Not for my picture books. However, I draw and paint all the time in sketchbooks, just for fun. That is where I can experiment, using whatever medium I fancy. I used to prefer 3B or coloured pencils, but in recent years I have started to sketch with ink and watercolours too, which I’ve discovered is great fun.

How did it feel to see your first published book?

Fantastic – of course! I was already used to seeing my work in print, but there is something very special about the high quality printing in a picture book and the fact that it is a stand-alone object. I love that it will be taken off into people’s homes and start a life of its own.

You must have great fun when you do the school visits.

School visits are a delightful discovery. I had no idea I would be able to work with children, in fact the idea terrified me at first! I have done hundreds now though, and they are great fun. They are also the perfect antidote to spending the rest of the time working on my own.

Are there any other children’s book illustrators in your field that you admire?

Way too many to mention them all. I love looking at other people’s work and it always seems so much more exciting than my own! Shaun Tan’s evocative and brooding images have always been a favourite, I love the richness of Dave McKean’s illustrations, David Melling’s humour, Mini Grey’s crazy attention to detail, Jason Chapman, Anna Laura Cantone, Sarah McIntyre, Lane Smith….

Your sketches of people on the train are wonderful. Do people mind you sketching them?

People mostly don’t seem to mind. I never ask permission though. If I do that, I end up drawing a portrait, which is a totally different thing - people are no longer natural, plus there's suddenly an expectation on me to achieve a likeness (as well as a need to make sure it's flattering!), which can make things quite stressful and spoil the enjoyment. My 'victim' often works out what I’m up to halfway through, but they tend to hold their original position and carry on with what they were doing.

Your sketches of people on the train are wonderful. Do people mind you sketching them?

Other than your sketches and your illustration, do you paint for pleasure?

Not at the moment – there just isn’t time. I think if I ever stop illustrating, or have major gaps between books, I will do more painting.

If only I lived nearer I would love to join the SketchCrawl. How did that come about?

SketchCrawling – drawing as a group, out and about - was started several years ago in San Fransisco, by Enrico Casarosa, and it is now an international phenomonon. It is about sharing a love of sketching and empowering one another.

I first heard about it through my association with the international sketching group Urban Sketchers. It sounded a fun idea, so I arranged one here in Sheffield, last September. I had no idea if anyone would turn up, but 25 people came. We all enjoyed it enormously – it’s a great way of turning a solitary activity into a group event and many said that drawing as a group gave them the confidence they needed to sketch outside. Everyone wanted to do it again ASAP, so I have been holding them roughly once a month ever since.

Now that Baby Goes Baaaaa! is heading to the publishers, what’s next for you?

I am currently working on the sequel, which will come out in the summer of 2012, hot on the heels of Baby Goes Baaaaa!, (published in April).

Painting and having fun!

I am very excited. Even though I am not getting anywhere fast on the cottage (have patience) I am so very excited at other things which are going on.

I hope to have some great news to share soon with you all, but in the meantime I shall continue to paint and produce art.

I read an article in a blog recently (can't remember which one now and I've even hunted for it), and the lady in question mentioned that in order to be successful you just need to paint. Do something, even if you are not sure where it is heading, just paint, as when you do that, opportunities arise. And that is what I am doing. I find that sometimes when I come home from work I sit down with a cuppa, open my laptop up and start browsing, checking emails and the like and then I become stagnant. I waste time. I mean what did we do before the internet. So now when I come home from work, I head to my studio and carry on where I left off. And it's such a wonderful feeling. If Jim is in, every now and then he will potter on down to chat with me as I paint, or to watch me, or just give me a kiss and go back to what he was doing. And I love that so much.

Here's to lots of happy, paint filled, creative days.

Sunday Sketches

Well I am so VERY excited. I have spent all week painting, painting and painting and had the best time. I have painted one picture, almost finished another one and started my next. I feel like a little production line. My excitement is due to the fact that when I painted the first one I tried to take photographs at most stages to see how the painting has developed. I have done this almost at every stage (there is always a part when you get so engrossed that you forget!). And what I have done is put it all in a little video for you to see. And this is my first EVER attempt at doing this so please bear with me....I hope they get better as I plan on doing more.

Here's my entry for this weeks Sunday Sketch, and although I know it isn't exactly a sketch, I couldn't do any sketching as well.... I was painting (big smiley face).

I know I have so much 'stuff' to do. Rennovating a cottage in a short time frame when you are working full time and not being able to do things to it as often as you like is frustrating. Especially since so much hinges on it.

So picking up a palette knife and starting a painting which invigorates and inspires you...which makes you feel alive.....which gives you tonnes of fun and warm fuzzy feelings is just what the doctor ordered.

Creativity = Happiness = Smiles = Peace = Fulfilment EQUALS Me xx

I had a day off work today which meant I had time to be creative. Inspired by the wonderful Kelly Berkey, I had forgotten just how much I love using a palette knife (and only a palette knife) to create a painting. So today I dusted off my acrylics and started a painting. Here's a sneek peek! (more to follow in another post).

It's been so long since I have used a palette knife to paint and this is another painting I did a while ago with just the knife.

I love the textures it gives and I find myself getting covered in paint as I use my fingers to help the paint move on the canvas - and to me that is heaven. Which is probably why I don't mind using pastels.

Sunday Sketches

It's not been a very creative week and I really do miss being creative. It's my core, it's in my soul so when I am not able to create it just doesn't feel right.

So as I have been unable to do anything to last weeks idea, I grabbed an old painting which is still taped to my painting board and decided enough was enough and that I was going to finish it one way or another. I've been working on it on and off for a couple of months now, dabbling every now and then but not actually making any decisions on it. So here it is, finished. I am not doing anymore to it and although I am not sure what to do with it, I may use parts of it as postcards or greetings cards. I won't cut it up, but just use photographs to find an area I like. 14/52 - Carrying on creating

This week I haven't really been that creative. I came down with another cold and have also been busy sorting other things out. Anyway, I picked up a painting I started ages ago to see if I could revive it. Can't say I'm convinced but I wanted to feel a brush on paper again.

My little head is whizzing around with all the things that need doing......so much so that I want to run and hide! Go somewhere nice, relax and when I come back it's all done. If only life was like that!!!

Sunday Sketches

This weeks sketch for Sunday Sketches is based on the lyrics of an Elbow song, Great Expectations. I saw them at the O2 on Monday and they were brilliant....actually better than brilliant. We had fantastic seats and they played all my favourite songs, so I was one happy bunny.

The sketches are very much a work in progress as I am still trying to work out the composition of the picture, but I thought I would share my progress so far.
